Wise people learn from their mistakes.
Wiser people learn from the mistakes of others.
Welcome to The Wiser Side of Life.
This website was created to share the knowledge and wisdom George and I have collected over our lives–nearly 50 years for him, and 43 for myself. Why do I think we have something special to share, enough so to spend the time and money to develop this website? Well, there are three reasons. First, we are both people who don’t like making the same mistake twice. (I really don’t like making mistakes at all, but I haven’t found a way around that one, yet!
)That means that when we make a mistake, we make every effort to analyze what went wrong, correct it, and make sure it doesn’t happen again. Since we’ve both made plenty of mistakes over our lives, we’ve managed to collect a vast knowledge bank of information on practical topics, as well as deeper insights into people, relationships, careers and personal development. We are also avid readers, so we offer a combination of book knowledge and street sense. Second, between the two of us, we cover a lot of life territory–from inner city street life to rural farm life. For more on this, see About Us. Finally, we are both teachers at heart. We care about people and want to help others by sharing what we know.
At a younger age, I was passionate about helping people by sharing “advice.” It didn’t take me long to figure out that most people don’t care to try to improve their lives or learn a new skill or delve deeper into the make-up of human nature to have a more rewarding, less difficult life. Feeling slightly jaded, I gave up trying to help anyone with anything I knew, and justified it by thinking, “They wouldn’t care, anyway.” However, George and I both have a personality trait that makes it almost impossible to sit by while watching others go through difficult situations through their lack of knowledge. That’s when I thought of making the transition from a push information model–basically giving unsolicited advice–to a pull information model. With this website, information we believe can help people is available 24/7. People who are able and willing to profit from it can pick and choose from the various topics. They can also choose to agree or disagree, and to implement or ignore. People who aren’t interested can simply catch the next wave and surf right out of here. “No harm, no foul,” as the saying goes.
So, now that you know the “why” of The Wiser Side of Life, you may be wondering about the “what.” What exactly can you expect to find here? To start, you will find a collection of “How To” articles on both George’s and my blogs. We have both learned quite a number of skills in our life, and we share basic to advanced techniques on many topics. Within George’s blogs, you will also find articles on life in a retail career, boxing (he was in the pro ranks for several years), his battle with a rare illness called stiff person syndrome, and his passion–keeping kids on the right path in life. George is also a riveting motivational speaker for children and adults alike. You can learn more about engaging him as a speaker here. My areas include homeschooling, farm and garden, home improvement, humor and human nature. Of course, we both have miscellaneous topics that don’t really fit into one category or the other. After all, the stuff that goes into “life” doesn’t always fit neatly with a pre-printed label.
Browse around. You might want to read about us first, then check out our articles. Hopefully you will find something to make your day a little brighter or your life a little easier, or maybe just make you feel a little smarter. Maybe you will find something that really makes you think. Or, maybe you’ll find a reason to change and grow. If you find something that really benefits you, consider making a donation.
Many of the articles in the Farm Philosophy category include stories of my dairy goat experiences. My enjoyment of this aspect of the farm led to the creation of the website Everything Goat Milk. If you’re interested in learning about the nutritional benefits of goat milk, as well as recipes, cheesemaking, skin care products or processing techniques, be sure to visit!
We hope your experience here will leave you with something to improve your life–even it it’s only a smile!
Thanks for coming, and best wishes for a wiser life!
